Using GPX/KML files

What is a GPX or KML file?

KML (Keyhole Markup Language) and GPX (GPS eXchange Format) files are file formats used to store coordinates of geographic points. When these GPX or KML files contain coordinates of a series of points, they constitute “a circuit”.

In practice, when it comes to circuit files, these are often directly named “KML” or “GPX” or “KML traces”, “GPX traces”.

It is possible to use a KML or GPX circuit interchangeably to follow a route. The choice between one or the other depends on the compatibility of the application used for tracking (Some applications will only accept the GPX format, others only the KML format, still others both formats).

However, there are conversion tools, such as the site https://gpx2kml.com/ allowing you to switch from one format to another.

How to use GPX or KML files?

The Bruche valley tourist office provides all circuits on the site free of charge velo-bruche.fr in GPX format. To use these files on your smartphone, you need a dedicated application.

A GPS tracking application using KML or GPX will allow you to view a route on a map and find your way in real time (GPS). This app will make sure you follow the route. There are many GPS tracking apps, some free or paid, others that use mobile data to load base maps, and others that offer this functionality offline.

We suggest you use the “GPX Viewer” application, it is compatible with Apple (App Store) and Android (Play Store), does not require registration, and is free. This application requires using your mobile data to display base maps.

Steps to follow to read and track a GPX file with the “GPX Viewer” application

1- Phone settings

On Apple: Make sure your Localization service is engaged in Settings>Privacy. Also check that your cellular data are activated.

On Android : Make sure your GPS positioning and your mobile data are activated (blue symbols) by scrolling down your menu from the top of the screen. Be careful, sometimes there are several settings screens (swipe to the left to access them).

2 - Install GPX Viewer

Open the App Store, search for “GPX Viewer” and install the app.

Open the Play Store, search for “GPX Viewer” and install the app.

3 - Open the GPX file and follow the track

If you have already downloaded the GPX file to your smartphone, go to your downloads, click on the GPX file, and choose “GPX Viewer” to open it.

If you have not yet downloaded the GPX file to your smartphone, click on the download link, then when your mobile asks you (automatic opening after downloading), choose “GPX Viewer” to open it.

Once the application is open, you see the route and your position. In the settings, we advise you to use the “OpenTopoMap” base map. Adjust the zoom scale, center your position on the screen and off you go!

For more comfortable use, consider setting your screen to automatically go to sleep (5 to 10 minutes depending on your needs, or even deactivate it). Please note, disabling automatic screen sleep will lead to a reduction in your battery life.
